Final project - Illustration and Design of Children’s Books course with Carlos Higuera

I am very happy to share my final project from the Designing of the Children’s Books course. Organised and presented by a published children’s author Carlos Higuera, it gave a perspective and showed how to approach the design of a short illustrated story for children.

My presentation sums up of everything I learned during this course. It is a publishing proposal for the children’s book “Little Dorothy and the Cat called Daisy”.

The book has been designed for small kids up to 5 years old, girls in particular. It is written in Polish. It is a free interpretation of a classic Polish nursery rhyme about a cat on a fence. The rhyme is in fact 170 years old and was originally written by a famous music composer Stanisław Moniuszko in 1849.

It my my interpretation, the cat is in fact a little feline called Daisy. She is lost and homeless. Looking for a friendly place, she wanders around the neighbourhood and visits a girl named Dorothy. Dorothy asks the cat about her story, offers her milk and a fish with red currants. Daisy accepts milk and fish, but kindly refuses the currants.

The girl and the cat spend some lovely time together and watch the sunset enjoying each other’s presence.

It is a story about finding your place, friendship and hospitality.
