Macramé is a therapeutic handcraft that can add a rustic and cozy feel to your interior spaces. The next time you’re looking for a rainy day craft idea, why not knot your own contemporary, asymmetric wall hanging with this simple technique?

Here, fiber artist Emily Katz (@emilykatz_modernmacrame) shares a free pattern that demonstrates how to tie square knots and make a wall hanging with an off-beat diagonal design.

Some of Emily Katz's work that demonstrates the functional and decorative aspects of macramé.

Emily has taught macramé to thousands of students and even published a book, Modern Macramé: 33 Stylish Projects for Your Handmade Home. She founded Modern Macramé after observing the lack of accessible quality materials for crafters and fiber artists. She has been featured in Forbes, The LA Times, Buzzfeed, and many more.

What is macramé?

Macramé is a type of textile that is produced using knots. Various knot styles can be used, and they can be combined in an infinite number of ways to create both functional and aesthetic pieces—think plant holders, clothing, and decorative art.

The technique has a long history, but with the rise of Instagram, macramé was resurrected as part of the growing DIY and craft movement, being a budget-friendly way for people to decorate their homes.

What do I need to get started?

For your macramé wall hanging, you will need:

1. Cord, which could mean cotton rope, yarn, hemp, ribbon, or many other materials, depending on the finish you want. The thinner the material, the smaller the knot you’ll get.

2. A mount. For example, a bar of wood, metal, or plastic to hang the piece from. Emily recommends driftwood for an organic look.

3. A hook or an equivalent to hold your mount in place as you work. You could hang it from the back of a door, for example.

4. Scissors, sharp enough to cut through the cord you’ve selected cleanly.
