Pick an artist:
I really enjoy the maximalist, perspective-bending work of Cinta Vidal (cintavidal.com). It has the ability to tell multiple stories at once that may or may not even be related. It's graphic and often includes patterns on clothing and textiles, a detail I love. She has a gorgeous sense of color, light and composition and can, truly impressively, work at all scales. Here are a couple of her paintings.
Response to Debajo del Sombrero (debajodelsombrero.org):
1. MARÍA LAPASTORA
These high-contrast pieces create a dichotomy between dense content and negative space. Large white or neutral coloured forms offset the detail-rich dark areas, breaking through a heaviness, creating buoyancy, insinuating stories.
2. RODRIGO CABRERA
These pieces find lovely tensions through composition combining bold, stationary forms, and light, active scribbles and words. The resulting texture is quite intimate and reveals hidden themes and objects.
3. JOSÉ MANUEL EGEA
This work is clearly quite personal and thematic, focusing on transformation and the complexity of being human. Its editorial presentation establishes a relatable, relevant context that helps clarify the perspective of the artist.
4. JORGE BERMEJO
These cityscapes capture a character and experience of a place by bending the rules of perspective and emphasising contrast. In some cases, the streets and buildings seem to be personified, as if they themselves are occupants of the place and not the place itself.
5. SERGIO CARNICERO
These pieces reveal an image through layers of veils. The first welcomes the viewer into the space, breaking reality. The second is a sort of a foreground, or focal point. And the third and fourth veils seem to build out a context, or environment. Together, they create textural, abstract stories featuring real and imaginary characters and a unique, consistent perspective.
