“Techniques and Patterns In the previous lesson, we learned a bit about the Danish cord and its attributes. Now, we'll discuss some of the patterns that you could do with this material. The first one I'm showing you here is called the maze pattern. This is a simple weave and one that a beginner could easily pick up on. This is woven in sets of five in my pattern here. You can see on the back of this panel, I did a different pattern. That's something chair makers often do, where they do a different pattern on the bottom of a piece that's a bit quicker to weave. Heide Martin is a designer specializing in furniture and houseware. After graduating with two degrees in landscape architecture and urban design, she realized that her true passion lay in making things by hand. Inspired by her hobby and her carpenter husband, Heide went on to study an intensive woodworking course where she honed her skills.
Since then she’s worked with brands including Laura Mercier, contributed to Fine Woodworking Magazine, and started her own studio alongside her husband where she practices her passion for handmade woven surfaces. Heide has also been a resident and visiting artist at San Diego State University, Maine College of Art and Design, and more. As well as selling and exhibiting her work internationally, she has taught furniture design at Escuela de Artes y Oficios Santo Domingo, and assistantships at the University of Washington and Center for Furniture Craftsmanship.
