In 1991, I wrote a cover story for The New York Times Magazine that became a book. Working on a long feature story is a great way to figure out whether it's something you'd like to commit yourself further to by turning the lengthy piece into a book. Once I "met" the house at the Glienicke Bridge, which is the main character of the book, I knew I wanted to spend a very long time getting to know it.
