This poster means so much to me, because I developed it for my Domestika course and because I made it specially for me and the place I share with my partner. I started by looking at the space where I would place the poster, which is a wall in my bedroom that is the first thing that I see in the morning and by finding the message in it, which is "the future is today". I decided on this message because I live in Seattle, which can be gloomy at times, thing that makes it harder get out of the bed in the mornings. For me, this message is a reminder that it is today when you build the place where you want to be in tomorrow and to remind me of the most important things for me, which are love, joy, hope, collaboration and justice. I also decided on this message because it is the title of a Cafe Tacvba song that I was obsessed with at that time.
After I had my message I decided on a mood board for the illustration using references and aesthetics I find interesting, including an image of my own work. Once I had the mood board and a color palette that would work with my bedroom aesthetic and would take into consideration me and my partner's favorite colors, I worked on sketching the composition and the theme for the illustration: a party where everyone is invited. I included lemons, palm trees and characters that were doing things related to my message, to which I added some supporting concepts so I could have more ideas to draw.
After I decided on my final sketch I used it to make the poster with Adobe Illustrator, you can see this process in the course, but please feel free to use other kind of software to make your project, or make it in a traditional way with paints and paper!
Once I had my poster I printed it and used a poster frame to place it on my wall. It was so satisfying to see something that means so much to me in my bedroom, ready to set the mood for the day and remind me of my life priorities. I invite you to try this process and use your skills for your most important client: Yourself and your wellbeing.
The possibilities for this course are endless, you can make posters for you or your loved ones, for events and of course, to hone your design skills for professional and commercial use.
Here are some images of the process!
