I live in Nevada and see wild mustangs all the time on my walks. Burros live south of us. They are gentle and curious. The bird is an American Kestrel. I see them on walks in the deserty areas. Where burros or mustangs live are no trees. I had to stretch to do the plants for desert animals, for sure. I did three other paintings but they were too me and my own style so I started over to really really make a piece as she told us to do. Put away the photos, don't sketch it on the final painting just paint it on, I took chances with color (listened to the voice - "lavender burros, lavender burros....."), and I only used red, blue, yellow, white (and a little burnt umber :). Thank you. You are an excellent instructor. I want to do a frog next - there'll be more types of leaves and plants.
Hi Mimi! Thank you very much for sharing and sorry for my delay in responding. I want to congratulate you, for the sensitivity you have when drawing and how delicate the treatment of your composition is. The choice of colors is very warm and takes us to the landscapes where you live, and the position of the animals is very moving. I really liked how you solved it. I would suggest that you explore further with your ground / background colors. It subtly changes the tones of the foregrounds from those of the last ones (front, with more saturation and back a little more gray) to help us with the feeling of depth.
Apart from that, I think you have a clear idea of how to solve the images you have in mind. Keep listening to that voice! It is the one that is guiding you when you draw, it is you trusting in you. Congratulations!
