Hi Cindy. I used white paper and charcoal. I first roughly sketched out the bird with a charcoal pencil then lightened the sketch by rubbing it with my hand. I then used charcoal powder with a brush to block in the major areas and darkest areas. From there it was just playing with charcoal powder (wet and dry), vine charcoal, charcoal pencil and eraser to create what you see. The background is charcoal smeared with my fingers. To finish I added a few marks of white charcoal.
Hi Mike, well this is just splendid!! And I loved hearing more about your process. Super expression throughoutout but I especially love the marks in the background and the texture these have created on the coarse paper. Strong tonal range in the turkey, and lovely areas of pattern in each part of its body. You've really got that glint in its eye too. I hope you will continue to create - this is excellent work.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you did this, what paper, materials? I really like it and especially the way you have done the background.
