Sketchbook character studies

In this sketchbook from 1998, I experimented with a bold, graphic style, focusing on line. I would often draw live at bars and restaurants, trying to capture the spirit of the people in a casual, social environment. In my early illustration days, I was drawn to the aesthetic and design of Miguel Covarrubias’ work. I also connect with Covarubbias because he had a passion for adventuring out into the world to experience and document cultures.
