Hi,
I am very excited to take part in this course, because I'm in love with Steve Simpson's works and it's a wonderful opportunity for fans around the world to connect and create together. The song selection was not so easy for me - there were few ones that I love musicly but I found them hard to connect lyricly. At the end I chose Fire by Crazy World Of Arthur Brown.
I had a rough time concentrating through the whole process of sketching, because of the quarantine, so the minute I felt like I'm onto something I decided to develop it.
Since I enjoy illustrating I had a tough time with the lettering.
I tried to create letters from scratch, inspired by psychadelic posters of the 60's but it wasn't working out.
At the end I decided to look at 60's fonts and I found Caslon Swash Arriola which was the basic inspiration for the title font. From there the rest of the lettering process became much easier.
The final composition and the little details changed through the process.
The colour selection was easy, I listened to Steve's advice and looked up the 2020 colour trends and chose one of palettes.
I had so much fun working on the final illustration. I'm very happy with the final result.
During the searching process I found lots of really cool modern posters using hand lettering, and it made me want to use more of lettering in my illustrations.
Thanks for this wonderful experience!

wow!!! very impressed - this looks so good.
like the way you have broken the illustration into the white border. The 'FIRE' lettering works really well as does the colour palette. Great balance throughout, lots of detail - the limited palette really helps simplify the complexity of the detail - lots to love about this.
being picky (that's my job:))) - I'd like to see more detail in the maroon ribbon shape which is quite flat in comparison to the rest of the design and as such attracts the eye - something similar to the hair texture but more subtle would help. The drop shadow on your name could be bigger (purely because the background it sits on is already dark so need more to be seen. And a tiny, tiny thing - On the 'A' in Inna, there's no hi-light on the descender:))))
thank you so much for sharing and congratulations!!!
best
Steve

@stevesimpson Thank you so much for your kind words! Your 'picky' (😉) comments sound logical, so I will gladly fix the project.

I really like this. The creepy concept really fits the song. I would have imagined the burning figure in red, but the blue is totally unexpected and makes the flames and lettering pop. The "Fire" lettering is nicely done, too.

@marty_3 Thank you! I was having a tough time with the 'Fire' letters. At first I didn't want the letters to be so 'obviously' flame shaped, but after a few tries and looking at many references I gave up and accepted the fact that it's not so bad. Most of my references had toxic colour scheme, so inspired by that I just improvised without planning too much.
