Below is my most up to date design and color palette.
Starting to create a more refined / final design and color palette. I'm not totally sold with the palette, so I might do some tweaking. I still have some work to do, but I think it's at least coming along :)
Below is my first rough color exploration. I'm going to explore a few other options to see if there is another mood that might be more suited for the art.
Since I've got a setting sun in the background, I think it could look cool if everything in my composition was back lit.
Below are my thumbnail sketches. The three that are outlined in orange are the ones that I'd like to refine a bit further. The thumbnails on the left and right are meant to represent a sort of surrealist landscape as a metaphor for the center of the mind. And the center thumbnail is a more simple design focusing on the idea of having a vision. The iris of the eye in the center would have psychedelic color spirals, with my name written in the red veins of the eye. The lettering of the song title would all converge towards the eye.
Hello!
This class has been a blast so far. It honestly took me way longer to pick out a song than I had originally anticipated. But I'm really happy where I landed. I chose the song 'Journey to the center of the mind' by The Amboy Dukes.
Here's an snippet of lyrics from the song that I find particularly interesting and image provoking:
"Come along if you care
Come along if you dare
Take a ride to the land inside of your mind
But please realize
You'll probably be surprised
For it's the land unknown to man
Where fantasy is fact'

Profesor PlusGreat random page of sketches - looking really good.
Maybe worth exploring more ideas for the lettering - because you have so many words / characters in your title - try looking at different sizes of different words - emphasis on the most important words. Also try different styles of lettering maybe.
Like the striped tube - could see that intertwined through you final image
Lots of ideas there - thanks for sharing

@stevesimpson Hey Steve, Thanks for the feedback! I will for sure explore some alternate lettering styles, and will adjust the scale hierarchy considering the importance of each word. Thanks for the heads up!
I'm excited to keep pushing forward with this project. Thanks again for putting this class together and taking the time to comment. Your insights are invaluable.

Profesor PlusProgressing nicely - remember the sun should be bright too :))) you could add a bit tonal difference to the underside of the mushroom - if the sun is the source then it would be hitting the whole of that - casting a shadow of the stem across it. Looking great though - like the dark background idea :)))

@stevesimpson Thank you! That totally makes sense. Of course the sun, the origin of light, needs to be bright! And the bottom of the mushroom would for sure catch that light as well. I'll make some edits and re-upload. Thanks again for catching that!

Wow, this is an amazing batch of work! The color studies are so good and so different, each one has a different vibe. One thing I like about the "First rough color", the gritty orange and brown one, is that the forward side of the underneath of the mushroom is dark. It really makes the title lettering stand out. That one really feels like a vintage album cover to me. These are nice!
