Hi Troy, thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed the course.
Here's what I think is working well with this drawing:
- you've clearly been disciplined with your shadow mapping. The shadow shapes are clearly defined, and are an even, flat tone. This really contributes to the 3D feel of the final drawing.
- the proportions are good, and you've got the tilt and angle of the head right. I think you've done a better job of capturing a likeness than I did on the filming day (I've since revisited and tweaked my drawing so I am more happy with it now - its always important to be brave enough to make changes if something doesn't look right).
- you've understood the planes of the head well, and have assigned the correct tonal value to each plane.
Things that could do with a bit of work:
- it's lacking in texture a bit, everything seems very smooth. The stubble and the wrinkles of the forehead are a good place to introduce texture. Subtlety is key though, you don't want to break the overall tonal qualities and structure of the head by introducing shadows or highlights where they don't exist.
- it's common to over exaggerate shapes. I think the whole silhouette on the right side of his face (our right) is a bit over exaggerated. His hair projects too far, and his cheekbones look too prominent, making him look a bit gaunt. I think some subtle tweaking of these outlines will help.
- I think his right cheek is too light. Making it darker will help it feel as if it's receding away from us.
All in all, this is a great drawing, that has a real 3 dimensional quality to it. It often only takes a few tweaks to improve it, I think you've got a really solid piece of work here.
Hi Sam
So stoked to get your feedback, absolute gold.
Appreciate the critique so I understand what’s working and what’s not.
Valuable stuff.
Once again awesome course!

This drawing is an actor. It looks like the one Superman played in man of steel.

It's definitely Henry Cavill. Great job.
