That's so kind of you! I am glad you like this piece. I thought the charcoal medium worked well for the characteristics of this bird. Thanks for your lovely comments.
I zoomed in on this one and it is interesting how you were able to make the feathers look like feathers without actually drawing individual feathers. I tend to go into too much detail - and sometimes that just clutters things up. Similarly, the detail wasn't necessary on the branch - another place I might add too much and make a distraction. The detail on the eye, however, was perfect. I am seeing that it is important to know where to concentrate the fine-tuned stuff, and where to let it go. Thanks, Judy. I really liked this one.
Wow! What can I say - Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. I really appreciate them.
Believe it or not - I also have the tendency to put in way too much details! I learned the techniques that I used in this charcoal nuthatch from taking Sarah Stokes courses. There is a fine balance, I am learning, between whether or not to illustrate using full-on details or take a more minimalistic approach but still keep the clarity and identity of the subject matter recognizable. One thing I know for sure - the eye is always important!! It takes lots of practice and sometimes just letting yourself enjoy the moment!
