For the final project, I dared to draw a self portrait 😬 with an image having highlights and darks! However as it was a bit slanted I found it hard to place the proportions right! After many trials, I sketched on a A3 size with an orange colored pencil. Then I started to color with soft pastels, of which I have a limited palet of colors ( 10 colors only ) I started coloring the mid tones with an orange and spotted the dark contours here and there( of the eyes,brows, mouth, … ) and I must say that I found it easier to smooth out the mid tones with my finger first … Then using a few other colors started to define the features and went over the mid tones once more, this time leaving them as is w/o smoothing further !!! and here we are !

Teacher PlusThank you for sharing! I love the fact that did a self-portrait, in doing so, you took control of the subject and I think you can see this in the final drawing. You handled the shapes very well and I like your methodical approach to applying the marks. The other thing that I think is very successful is the way that you have used the pastels on their side to create some lovely big abstract and expressive marks. My only suggestion would be to try on different types of paper to see what different results you get and also to think about providing even more of a darker tone around the head to push the subject forward.
