Paper-Mache Design: Explore Light and Color

“During the lessons I taught you all the secrets to create a perfect papier mache structure, now it's your turn! Follow these basic steps to complete your project. Don't just copy my example, but experiment and invent something new. In this way, you will learn to independently apply the techniques I have taught you and you will have fun developing the design you like best. First of all, tear the paper into thin strips and put it to macerate in water; as I mentioned during class, you will have to let it soak for a couple of days. Then, prepare the basis of the project. You can experiment with my structure by following the directions you find in the Additional Resources, but I suggest you create your own version by playing with some variations. If this is your first time tackling a project of this kind, try to keep it simple so that you have the freedom to experiment and learn the basics of this technique without fear of making a mistake. Cut the pieces of cardboard and assemble the base of the structure. Remember that this is the right time to make the holes you will need to hang it on the wall when you are done.

Finish the preparation of the papier-mâché by draining the paper from the water: squeeze it well to dry it as much as possible. Then, combine the glue and mix the dough. If you want, at this point you can already add the dye as I showed you. Otherwise leave it like this, you will color it later. Distribute the papier-mâché well with your hands, covering all parts of the structure.
Once the papier-mâché has dried, apply the first coat of white to fill in any holes in the coating, then start with the color. It will take at least 3 coats to achieve an even finish.
Now share your work in the forum! Show everyone both the final result and the processing steps, documenting each step with an image and describing what you did with a brief explanation. As soon as possible, I will be happy to comment on your work. Look at the projects of colleagues and encourage them by commenting on what they have shared: do not miss the precious opportunity to interact with the creative community. Thanks again for making this journey with me!”

“Final project Here we are at the end of this Domestika course. Thanks for taking my lessons. I hope I have passed on my passion for design to you through these simple experiments with paper, color and light. That of papier-mâché is an artistic technique of very ancient origins, which uses recycled paper material to create sculptures, decorations and even functional objects. Now it's your turn, roll up your sleeves and start building your final project. A functional structure, in papier-mâché, to hang on the wall. First, tear the paper into thin strips and put it to macerate in water. As I m...”
