Basketball Cupcake

For this basketball cupcake, I was inspired by the texture of real basketballs - how they have lots of bumpy dots on them. And I realized that orange nonpareils could achieve that texture really well!
In addition, I've been experimenting with using food-safe string on my cupcakes as a way to reveal a color underneath and add dimension. So using string to create the indented lines in the basketball made perfect sense - and was so satisfying to do.
This basketball turned out better than I could have imagined!

First, I made a flat base of black buttercream by flipping the cupcake upside down onto parchment paper...

Carefully, I used a palette knife to spread a thin layer of orange buttercream on top, and dipped in nonpareils.
