Awesome! You've picked out a unique subject here. I think your color choices are great-- the cool grey definitely pops the red subject out, and using middle values for the background adds to the 3D effect of your subject, too. Very punchy and graphic!
If you're getting a lot of texture in your paint, try mixing a bit more water and smooshing it around on the palette a bit more before applying. This will keep your piece feeling a bit more graphic. For symmetrical objects, sometimes it also benefits the composition to just center it-- the piece feels a tad off kilter positioned to the right, because the outer shape is otherwise mirrored.
