After choosing cats as the subject of my Inktober in 2020, (for those who don’t know Inktober, it’s a challenge that requires you to make one drawing per day during the whole month of October, following the list of daily topics for that year. The drawings are in black and white because they were stopped at the inking stage.) I wanted to illustrate animals in a more general way for the challenge in 2021. I made my own list of topics, and to be honest, I was amazed at the number of participants from all over the world who followed this list, day after day. Animals are an inexhaustible source of references for any illustrator. It is a privilege to witness the impressive diversity that is provided to us by mother nature through the animal kingdom. My daily goal during this challenge was to capture the essence of each of them with pen and ink while trying to focus on an interesting composition. Ink is for me the most direct way to express my vision of reality on paper. No cheating, the slightest mistake is noticeable. However, with a little practice, this technique allows us to reach one of the most powerful visual languages to serve those who really need it: the animals.
