I choosed the main colors of the book for all of my cover designs and I wanted to use drawn images from the comic. The handwritten words of Jack the Ripper were straight forward for the title.
The idea behind the first version: the book cover is similar to a door, and as the reader enters the book, Jack the Ripper is enters his mind. The silhouette is familiar, but the person behind the lines will take shape during the book, no face yet, but the phenomenon stands in front of. The red lines are connected with bloody cloths.
The second version is steps backward. We are just following the hunt of Jack, we see the events through that spyhole. The circle also referes to a bloody fingerprint with the lines and a red light of a brothel too. I tried to connect with the grapes from the story too, creating five bubbles refering the five victim connected with the stalk (=Jack) but it was too busy for the cover.
The third and final version grows from the first version but referes the multy layered aspect of the story. Jack's vision with Satan shows him a different reality and it is the spark that triggers the killings. Everything has a secret other world face in the eyes of Jack, and the strong satanic/masonic aspect of the story is really important. I made the name of the creators bigger and I used modern typeface for it because the creators are superstars in the comic industry, they are as importants as the characters of the story. The reson why I used a modern style for the names is the storytelling has really modern aspects and scenes from the present, and it brings the book to the contemporary comic market.
I really enjoyed the course, thanks professor Chip!
