A great way of expanding your visual library as a character designer is to observe life wherever possible. I do this by sketching people, either in real life or from photos found online. I like to push expressions, proportion and colour when I do this, as the goal is to present my interpretation of the person - not a literal facsimile of how they exist in the real world.

I like to ask myself "What if?" questions. "What if I make the nose bigger? What if I change the colour of their outfit? What if I restyle their hair?" Usually I find that I come up with a whole new character just by answering a few of these questions!
