To make these square slabbuilt plates I first had to make the mould and stamps. I made my mould out of a 2cm thick clay slab. I cut it to shape, let it dry, and bisque fired it. The stamps were also made out of clay and carved when stiff, dried, then bisque fired.
Next, I rolled out a half centimetre slab of soft clay and transferred a large enough piece onto a board. I layed my bisque mould in the centre of the slab and stamped texture around the shape of the mould.
I then placed another board on top of the mould and flipped both the mould and the textured slap upside down. At this point, I gently formed the slab around the mould. Once evenly formed, I cut off the excess slab to my desired shape. Then, I let it set up in this position until the clay was stiff.
Once the clay wass stiff enough to support its shape, I gently flipped the plate and mould back upright. At this point, I lifted the bisque mould out of the plate and trimmed the plate flange to my finished edge.
When the plate was almost dry, I gently smoothed any rough edges with my fingers to clean up the rim.
Once dry, the plate was bisque, then glazed, then glaze fired.
I made a bunch ofd different sized moulds to make stacking plates of different sizes
