I knew I wanted to take the Grimm version of the fairytale, Cinderella, and show a scene that isn't typically shown in children's books or film adaptations. This scene explains the meaning behind Cinderella's name - "little cinder girl." The story incorporates birds often, and I wanted to illustrate the scene where Cinderella is told by her stepmother to clean up the peas and lentils from the hearth, and only then can she attend the King's festival.
As the story goes, white pigeons and turtledoves, followed by birds of all kind, assist Cinderella in gathering the peas and lentils. Her stepmother scatters them again into the hearth, telling Cinderella once more to clean them up, only then can she attend the King's festival.
Even after cleaning up the peas and lentils two times, Cinderella's stepmother tells her she can't come to the festival because she has nothing to wear.
