In these images I share a story of Nancy. She is 54, she is a mum of 2, and she has only one leg. She lost her other leg after a gymnast training accident when she was only 28. At that point she had recently had her wedding and was thinking of starting a family. She gathered up her courage and decided to proceed with the plan. Two years later she was learning to walk together with her first child. However, it was not till years later that she started a journey towards accepting herself and loving her body the way it was. The stories of female strength and resilience, as well as self-love and self-acceptance are what I’m interested in as an artist. It's important to me to redefine the idea of beauty, as I strongly believe that beauty is not external, it's a light coming from within, and Nancy is a great example of that.
Sweetie. Self-portrait.
This self-portrait is about gender inequality. Often times I hear men calling a women they barely know "sweetie" or "sweetheart". It sounds patronising and it's definitely an attempt to diminish that woman during their interaction.
In this self-portrait I used over 30 meringues to create a headpiece as a representation of being a "sweetie". While my facial expression looks quite challenging and says the opposite.
